Start at the beginning and discover life before the Savannah River Plant was announced in 1950. Hear from former residents about education, religion, school, and other topics. Exhibit funded by the Department of Energy office of Legacy Management. 

SRS Timeline


A large timeline chronicles major events from 1946, the beginning of the Cold War with the Soviet Union and its satellites, through 2015, with major events at the Savannah River Site. The timeline was installed in the Museum in 2015 and continues to fascinate visitors.

Simulated Glovebox

The simulated glovebox exhibit provides a realistic, interactive experience in working with radiation.  Visitors learn about the challenges associated with working safely with radiation through shielding, time, or distance.  

Fallout Shelter Exhibit


​​A replica fallout shelter reflecting concerns about the possibility of a Soviet nuclear attacked is stocked with every supply one might need.  The "Duck and Cover" video, which was shown to school children during the 1950s and 1960s,  is available for viewing. 

SREL Exhibit

The Savannah River Ecology Laboratory has contributed radio-tracking collars and transmitters used to track movements of animals and birds at the Site.  Typical collars and transmitters have been installed on realistic fox and owl puppets to show how the equipment is mounted. Descriptive material explains the radiotracking program.

U-2A Spy Plane

​The Museum's entry exhibit is a scale model of the CIA U-2A spy plane known as the "Dragon Lady", built in the top-secret "Skunk Works" at the Lockheed Aircraft Corporation.  It was designed to fly over the Soviet Union at an altitude of 70,000 feet. The first overflights began in 1956. The U-2's are still in use today.


​Most of the exploration of the moon and earth's fellow planets has depended on electrical power made with Plutonium-238 made at SRS.  Some of the first non-weapon isotope products made at Savannah River were heat sources for Arctic stations as well as thermo-electric sources for use in the NASA space program and the race to the moon.
